A dense, fast-growing shrub with glossy green foliage that turns deep-red when new. Small white flowers are followed by edible purple berries.

Ideal as a hedge or to screen a fence, although it may not grow very dense toward the base if shaded. Doesn’t get much taller than an average suburban fence so it is useful for a small screen that doesn’t need much height pruning.

Prefers full sun to get the most consistent dense growth. Regular watering is required for young plants. Prune to shape. I prune this twice a year at least and it’s important to prune frequently when young. Don’t wait until the plant gets to the top of the fence to start pruning! I know it is hard to begin with, but if you start light pruning when it’s young then you will get dense coverage much sooner. Otherwise it could get leggy and ugly.

Can be infested with scale and mealy bugs. Natural bio-control such as Bugs for Bugs works well to bring these pests under control, permanently! Otherwise occasional spraying may be necessary with Eco Neem.
