Not to be confused with the common Hardenbergia violacea which is easy to find. This WA native can be distinguished from Hardenbergia v. by the 3 leaf cluster. Hardenbergia comptoniana is more beautiful in my opinion, with larger cascading flowers and good growth even in half sun.

A vigorous climber with cascading sprays of purple pea-like flowers and glossy green foliage, resembling wisteria.

Use it to cover trellises or a fence in full sun or a half day of sun. In it’s natural range it will over climb gently over old stumps which is a great way to use it in your garden.

I grow this vine together with the bright orange Kennedia coccinea for a beautiful contrast. But you could also try it alongside a pink or white climber – that would look so beautiful!

If it gets shade at the base then be careful to train the new stems along the horizontal supports to begin with. If you don’t do that then it will bolt up to the sun and leave the plant bare and without leaves at the base.

Thrives in well-drained soils with full sun to partial shade. Drought-tolerant once established. Prune after flowering to maintain shape. Can be bothered by leaf miner pests – use Eco Neem spray regularly if you don’t like the leaf damage, although they have no impact on flowering performance.
