A beautiful naturally occurring variety of Australian native Pelargonium. This variation of Pelargonium australe was found at Constable Creek in Tasmania. It has glorious burgundy undersides to the leaves and flowers abundantly with small soft pink flower clusters, streaked with magenta.

A stunning variety that really is best grown in a hanging basket or somewhere high enough that you can see under the leaves as they are the most gorgeous shade of burgundy underneath and a beautiful deep green on top. Perhaps at the top of a high retaining wall would be a good position.

I now have it growing in hanging baskets and pots in my South East Queensland garden and it is doing well provided it can be moved under cover during the long wet summer rains. It is tricky to grow in this sub-tropical climate – but will be low fuss I am sure in temperate gardens.

Requires well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade. Regular watering enhances growth but is drought-tolerant once established. I also found it very easy to propagate by using a sandy mix with tip cuttings shallow planted. It does self seed readily and the seedlings so far have grown true to the parent with the same coloured leaves to enjoy.
